Importing file external storage to PowerMax overview
Importing file-based external storage to PowerMax File is a migration solution that facilitates the transfer of a Virtual Data Mover (VDM) containing file data from an eNAS (version 8.1.0-15 onwards) to a PowerMax File cluster. This feature enables the seamless migration of a VDM, along with its configuration and data, from an existing source eNAS storage system to a designated PowerMax File destination.
The file import feature is designed to minimize disruptions and offers a smooth transition for VDM imports. However, it is essential to note that cutting over an SMB-only VDM import session can be a disruptive process.
For file-based VDM imports, once the cutover process is complete, the import procedure automatically performs an incremental copy. However, the finalization of the import must be done manually. The import process is always initiated from the PowerMax File, where the destination system makes a remote call to the eNAS system and initiates a pull operation (for file-based import) of the source storage resources to the destination system.
VDM import operations support the following scenarios:
- Import of VDM with NFSV3 protocol enabled (VDMs with NFSV4 protocol enabled are not supported).
- Import of VDM with SMB1/SMB3 (CIFS) protocol enabled.
NOTE: Import of VDM with multiprotocol file systems is also supported.
